When I was a child, there were several same-sex couples in my neighborhood—two female couples and two male couples. Both of the female couples had children (apparently conceived through sperm donation). One of the male couples had adopted children, and the other couple was elderly and didn’t have children.
Same-sex marriage wasn’t legal at the time, but to me they looked no different from any “legally recognized family.” Our families interacted regularly, and even as a kid I sometimes worked as a babysitter for them. (I even worked as a dog-sitter for the elderly couple, haha.)
While their family structure may have varied from a traditional one, they were all truly wonderful families.
Thanks to those neighbors, I grew up understanding the fact that gay people live normal lives just like we straight people do, and that they share the same values. And just as I don’t “choose” to be attracted to the opposite sex, I naturally came to understand that they didn’t choose to be gay.
If we acknowledge their existence, I don’t see any reason not to grant them the same rights that straight people have. On the contrary, as long as no one is harmed, I believe we should strongly support legally protecting the happiness of as many people as possible.
