Swans in the Hirose River

Every day, I take a walk along the Hirose River, and with the arrival of winter, dozens of swans fly in from Siberia in Russia. While watching the swans gracefully swimming in the river, I wondered how long they had been coming there. Upon researching, I found that their history is surprisingly old. In the area around the Shiroishi River, famous for its thousand cherry trees, a "swan worship" tradition has been deeply rooted since ancient times. Along with the legend that Yamato Takeru transformed into a swan, the custom of revering swans as messengers of God spread throughout the region. Particularly noteworthy is the legend that Yamato Takeru, who spent the winter at a temporary palace on Mount Otaka, was comforted by seeing the flock of swans flying to the Shiroishi River. Later, in historical records such as the "Date Family Records (1686-1874)" and "Oshu Kansaku Monroshi," it is said that there are records of the feudal lord's consideration in prohibiting the hunting of swans. Currently, in the human world, we have a delicate relationship with Russia under Putin, with whom we have had a long history of interaction. But when I think about how the swans have been visiting us every year since long before that relationship existed, it fills my heart with emotion.

毎日散歩している広瀬川河畔には、冬の訪れとともにロシア、シベリアから、数十羽の白鳥が飛来します。 河を優雅に泳いでいる白鳥を見ながら、彼らはいつごろからここに来ているのだろう、と思いました。 調べてみると、その歴史は意外と古く、一目千本桜で有名な白石川周辺では古くから「白鳥信仰」が根付いており、ヤマトタケルが白鳥に姿を変えたという伝説とともに、白鳥を神の使いとして崇める風習が広がっていました。 特に注目すべきは、大高山の行宮（かりみや）で冬を越したヤマトタケルが、白石川に飛来する白鳥の群れを見て慰められたという伝承です。 時代は下り、『伊達治家記録(1686-1874)』や『奥羽観蹟聞老志』には、白鳥を撃たないようにという藩主の配慮が記されているとされています。 今、人間界では、古くからお付き合いをしてきたプーチンロシアと、微妙な関係が続いていますが、ハクチョウたちはそんな関係よりもずっと前から毎年訪れてくれていたと思うと、胸がいっぱいになる思いです。
