Little Buttercup

In the novel” The Small Rain" written by Thomas Pynchon, Levine’s girlfriend’s name is “Little Buttercup”. Buttercup is the name of a flowering plant in the family Ranunculaceae. It is named because the petal is yellow, like butter, and its shape resembles a cup. One of the buttercups is called the water buttercup. This species, yellow water buttercup, is aquatic or semi-aquatic, growing in water or in or near muddy areas in many habitat types. The place of the novel is in the swamp in the southern part of America. Pinchon may have named her name imaging from this flower. In America, “Little Buttercup” is often used as a child's nickname.
