森か林か

In the novel “Greek Lessons” by Han Kang, a girl discovered the hangul character 숲 consists of ㅅ+ㅜ+ㅍ. The meaning is “woods”. She says the figure of 숲 resembled an old pagoda. Ancient Chinese people invented pictographs. 木 was made from the figure of a tree. If trees stand side by side, it’s 林. Three trees are crowded, it’s 森. So, we Japanese think 森 is bigger than 林. It is wrong. According to the Shuowen Jiezi, the oldest dictionary in China, "林lin" is explained as "a cluster of trees on plain land" and "森mori" as "the appearance of having many trees." That means 林 is a noun, but 森 is the condition of trees, adjective. Then why did we Japanese misunderstand the meaning of 林and 森? I suppose it simply came from the number of the trees. In addition to that, we have learned that in English, the difference between “wood=林” and “forest＝森” is their size; wood is smaller than forest. When I look up the word “숲” , it says “森= forest”. However, Han Kang says it means “woods.” Here, there is some confusion between the two words, too.

韓江の小説『ギリシャ語授業』の中で、少女がハングルの「숲」という文字が「ㅅ+ㅜ+ㅍ」で構成されていることを発見しました。 意味は「森」です。 少女は「숲」の形が古い塔に似ていると言います。 古代中国では象形文字が発明されました。 「木」は木の形から作られました。 木が並んで立っていると「林」です。 木が3本密集していると「森」です。 ですから、私たち日本人は「森」の方が「林」より大きいと考えてしまいます。 それは間違いです。 中国最古の辞書『説文解字（せつもんかいじ）』によると、「林」は「平地に木が密集している状態」、「森」は「木がたくさんある様子」と説明されています。 つまり、「林」は名詞ですが、「森」は木の状態、つまり形容詞です。 では、なぜ私たち日本人は「林」と「森」の意味を誤解したのでしょうか？ それは単に木の数から来たものだと思います。 それに加えて、英語では「wood＝林」と「forest＝森」の違いは大きさで、wood は forest より小さいということを学びました。 「숲」という単語を調べると、「森＝forest」と出てきます。 しかし、ハン・ガンは「林=woods」という意味だと言っています。 ここでも、この二つの単語の間には混乱が生じています。
