Inu-saffron

We often see Colchicum autumnale in this season. when we are taking a walk around our living places. It is also called autumn crocus, meadow saffron, naked boys, or naked ladies. It is lethally toxic due to its colchicine content, and the leaves and flowers have been mistaken by collectors for those of saffron, which they vaguely resemble. The flower of colchicum autumnale looks like saffron, so it is called “Inu saffron” in Japanese. In Japanese, “Inu” is generally added in front of the plant when the plant is alike the original plant but it is useless or poisonous. There are many plants named by this way, Inu-mugi (rescuegrass), inu-garashi (variableleaf yellowcress), inu-zansho（green flower-pepper）, etc. This “inu” didn’t come from “dog”, but it came from “ina=否”, meaning “not” or “different, or fake”.

この季節、私たちは生活圏内を散歩していると、イヌサフランをよく目にします。 秋サフラン、メドーサフラン、裸の少年、裸の貴婦人などとも呼ばれます。 コルヒチンを含むため猛毒で、葉や花はサフランと似ていることから、収集家がサフランと間違えることもあります。 イヌサフランの花はサフランに似ていることから、日本語では「イヌサフラン」と呼ばれます。 「イヌ」は、原種に似ているものの、実際には役に立たなかったり有毒であったりする場合に、一般的に名前の前に付けられます。 イヌムギ、イヌガラシ、イヌザンショウなど、この名前の植物はたくさんあります。 この「イヌ」は「犬」から来たのではなく、「いな＝否」から来ており、「違う」「偽物」という意味です。
