The Moon Festival Day

Yesterday, October 6, was the night for the full-moon festival held in Japan. We used to hold parties to celebrate the beauty of the full moon, but now we still look up full moon for pleasure. Unfortunately, we couldn't see the full moon because it was cloudy last night. The clouds and the moon remind me of the 36th poem written by the grandfather of Sei Shònagon. “On this summer night, when twilight has so quickly become the dawn, where is the moon at rest among the clouds?” They often held moon-viewing parties and they often experienced these situation, the moon behind the cloud. There is another poem written about moon viewing. “If, against my wish, In the world of sorrows still, I for long should live; -- How then I would pine, alas! For this moon of middle-night.” This is a sad poem written by the Emperor Sanjò. At that time, he was being forced to resign by Fujiwara Michinaga, who was the father of the succeeding Emperor. Fujiwara Michinaga had great power in the political world at that time. He wrote a poem that goes, “The world is my oyster as it is likened to a full moon without the wane.” In contrast with Michinaga, Emperor Sanjò was in the opposite situation. Our ancestors thought many things viewing the moon.

昨日10月6日は、日本で行われる十五夜（じゅうごや）の夜でした。 昔は満月の美しさを祝う宴会が開かれていました。 残念ながら昨夜は曇り空で満月は見えませんでした。 「雲と月」と聞くと、清少納言の祖父が詠んだ百人一首の36番歌を思い出します。 「夏の夜は　まだ宵ながら　明けぬるを　　雲のいずくに　月宿るらむ」 彼らはよく月見の宴を開き、このようなことがよくありました。 月見について詠まれた別の歌もあります。 「心にも　あらでうき世に　ながらへば　恋しかるべき　夜半の月かな」 これは三条天皇が詠んだ悲しい歌です。 当時、彼は次の天皇の父である藤原道長によって退位を迫られていました。 藤原道長は当時、政界で大きな権力を握っていました。 彼は「この世をば 我が世とぞ思ふ 望月の 欠けたることも 無しと思へば」という歌を詠みました。 道長とは対照的に、三条天皇は正反対の立場にありました。 私たちの祖先は月を眺めながら、様々なことを考えました。
