“Bound Jizo“ at Komega-fukuro

“Bound Jizo“ at Komega-fukuro A Jizo, a stone statue, is enshrined at Komega-fukuro, on the banks of the Hirose River. A strange custom is done whenever the people put up a prayer to the jizo. They bind the jizo with ropes made with straw. Why do they do such a strange custom to pray to the jizo? There is an old legend. In 1668, a family trouble happened in the Sendai feudal domain. Date Tsuna Mura, the fourth, was only one year old when he succeeded the feudal load. So, Date Munekatsu, the Ichinoseki branch feudal load and the tenth son of Date Masamune assisted him government. As he privatized the domain ‘s government, Ito Shichiziro Shigetaka tried to assassinate him. Unfortunately, the assassin failed, and he was caught and he was beheaded at the execution site at Kome-fukuro, and he was burried in the Seiganji temple, which existed at the opposite side of Hirose River at that time. Decapitation official Kobito Man-emon was so impressed with Shichiziro's bravery ending that he retired his work and then he became a monk and made a jizo for his prayer. Why was the custom started? Ito Shichiziro was bound with rope on the way to the execution site and beheaded. So, people who put up a prayer started to mimic the behavior to jizo. Binding the jizo, means to entrust their prayer to jizo, when the prayer comes true, they untie the rope with their gratitude. The jizo is bound even when I visited the jizo. I think someone is putting up a prayer still now. I heard that all the ropes were untied on July 23 every year.

米ケ袋、処刑場跡の縛り地蔵 広瀬川の畔、米ケ袋と言う所には縛り地蔵というお地蔵さまが祀られている。 このお地蔵様、願い事を願掛けする際に、お地蔵様を藁縄でぐるぐる巻きにする奇習がある。 何故そんなことをするのかというと、そこには言い伝えがある。 頃は1668年、樅ノ木（もみのき）は残ったという小説でも有名な伊達のお家騒動、「伊達騒動」が勃発する。 4代目藩主伊達綱村（だて つなむら）が当時まだ1歳だったため、周りの大人たちが権力を使うようになる。 そこで、伊東七十郎重孝（いとう しちじゅうろう しげたか）が、仙台藩を乗っ取ろうとしていた伊達政宗の十男で綱村の後見人で一関支藩の藩主、伊達宗勝（だてむねかつ）を討とうとするのだが、逆に捕縛されてしまう。 伊東七十郎重孝は米ケ袋の誓願寺河原処刑場で処刑され、かつて処刑場の対岸にあった誓願寺に埋葬される。 斬首役人、小人萬右衛門（こびと まんえもん）は伊東の見事な死に際に感銘し、翌日、小人頭をやめて仏門に入り、七十郎の供養に立てたのが縛り地蔵だと言い伝えられている。 七十郎が自ら縛られて処刑されることで藩の混乱を止めようとしたことにちなみ、願掛けの際に縄で縛る風習が生まれた。 縄を巻くことで「自分の願いを地蔵に託す」、そして願いが叶えば縄を解いて感謝を示すという、祈りと感謝の循環がこの信仰の核心だ。 今でもお地蔵さまは藁縄でぐるぐる巻きにされているところを見ると、誰かが願掛けをしているのだろう。 藁縄は年に一度7月23日に全部解かれるのだそうです。
