In Shakespear's Days

In Shakespeare's day, all drama roles, including those of female characters, were played by male actors. That means boys played female roles. This phenomenon was specific to England; in France and Italy, both male actors and female actresses were present. I know some male actors play female roles in kabuki in Japan. We call them Oyama or Onnagata, and they have nothing to do with their ages. However, in English drama, when young actors become older, they don’t play female roles. They stop acting female and retire after puberty because their voices change to an adult one. Therefore, there were no adult actors who played female roles.

シェイクスピアの時代には、女性役も含め、すべてのドラマの役は男性俳優によって演じられていました。 つまり、少年が女性の役を演じたということです。 この現象はイギリス特有のもので、フランスやイタリアでは男優と女形の両方が活躍していました。 日本の歌舞伎では、男性俳優が女性の役を演じることがあります。 私たちは彼らを「お山」や「女形」と呼び、年齢とは関係ありません。 しかし、イギリスのドラマでは、若い俳優は年を取ると女性の役を演じなくなります。 思春期を過ぎると声が大人のものに変わるため、女性を演じなくなり、引退します。 そのため、大人の俳優が女性の役を演じるということはなかったのです。
