Hibiscus coccineus / Texas star hibiscus / モミジアオイ （紅葉葵） When I walked around my house, some Texas star hibiscus was blooming in a neighbor’s yard. As you might imagine from its name, the Texas star hibiscus came from North America in the 1970s. The Japanese name Momiji-aoi comes from its leaf’s shape and its flower. The leaf has cuts like a ｍaple leaf, and its flower looks like a hibiscus. However, the flower’s petals are separated from each other, which is different from the usual hibiscus’s combined petals. Its flower meaning is “elegance”. You will agree when you see these deep-red flowers. Perhaps there might be a story like this. : In the 1970s, a single flower arrived in Japan from North America—a Texas Star Hibiscus. A botanical researcher named Satsuki was involved in a garden project cultivating exotic flowers. She was captivated by the flower, with its five crimson petals spreading out like a star. Its appearance resembled an elegant star blooming in the night sky. Every morning, Satsuki spoke to the flower. "How did you feel the wind? What kind of sky were you looking at?" One night, in her dream, the flower spoke to her. "I come from a land of wind and stars. Elegance means shining quietly. Your hand led me here." The next morning, a breeze blew through Satsuki's garden, and the flowers bloomed en masse. The maple jasmine flowers lined up like a constellation, and visitors were taken aback by their beauty. Satsuki named the garden "Star Garden" and continued to convey to people the value of elegance and tranquility through flowers.
