今昔物語　第５章第２話　 The tale of the origin of Simhara（simha-lion）, Sri Lanka. A king went into the mountains for deer hunting and was robbed of his daughter by a lion. Then the daughter gave birth to a baby boy from the lion. After growing up, the son went to the capital of the king with his mother and met the king, his grandfather. The king promises him to give half of the country if he brings the lion’s head. He went to the place where his father, the lion, was. And he killed his father with a bow and an arrow. As he had successfully kept the promise, the king gave him a part of the country, Ceylon Island. This is the origin of Sri Lanka. When I read this story, I feel for the lion. When his son came back to his place, he licked his child’s head and caressed him. But his son killed him. I wondered how the people in Japan at that time felt when they read this story.

今昔物語　第５章第２話　 スリランカのシンハラ（シムハー・ライオン）の起源を描いた物語。 ある王様が山へ鹿狩りに出かけたところ、ライオンに娘を奪われてしまいました。 娘はライオンを父とする男の子を産みました。 成長した息子は母と共に王都へ行き、祖父である王様に会いました。 王様はライオンの首を持ってきたら国の半分を与えると約束しました。 息子は父親であるライオンのいる場所へ行き、弓矢で父親を殺しました。 約束を守った息子は、国土の一部であるセイロン島を与えられました。 これがスリランカ国の起源です。 この物語を読むと、ライオンに同情します。 息子が故郷へ帰ると、ライオンは子供の頭を舐め、愛撫しました。 しかし、息子は彼を殺してしまいました。 当時の日本人は、この物語をどんな気持ちで読んだのだろうと思いました。
