The Stone tablet for the monument of Mongol invasions of Japan

I rode on a train to Ishinomaki to visit the Tohoku Museum yesterday. Soon after leaving the Sendai station, I had a glance there is an information board about the famous place and historical site in the area at Higashi Sendai station. It is written,” The Stone tablet for the monument of Mongol invasions of Japan”. I learned in my primary school that the invasions took place in 1274 and 1281 in Northern Kyushu in Japan. I wondered why the monument was built here in Sendai. I looked up the websites and found many interesting things. There are three kinds of monuments in Sendai. The monument was built in 1282, the following year of the second Mongol invasion. I imagined that time, and found that a lot of people in Sendai were sent to Kyushu as soldiers to fight against Mongolia. So, the people around Sendai knew how fearful the Mongols were. There is a word, “Mokuru-kokuri”. When the children don’t obey their mothers’ instructions, the mothers will threaten, saying, “If you are a bad child like that, mokuru-kokuru will come and beat you”. The “mokuru-kokuri” comes from the word, “蒙古、高句麗“, meaning Mongolia and Korea. The Mongol invasion that had happened at very far from Sendai shocked Sendai’s people. And they were handed down by word of mouth through generations. However, the mothers who are using this word won’t know its meaning of this word now. In 1941, Mongolian King Demchugdongrub visited the Stone tablet for the monument of Mongol invasions of Japan and planted a memorial tree for thanking to thank the Japanese people for their cordiality.
