“Yamato Gokoro”

The woman who first wrote about the “Yamato Gokoro”, Japanese minds, was Akazome Emon. 「乳母せんとて、まうで来りける女の、乳の細く侍りければ、詠み侍りける」と詞書があり、次に夫である博士の歌、「果なくも 思ひけるかな 乳もなくて 博士の家の 乳母せむとは」。 ここで「乳もなくて」の「乳」を「知」にかけている。 これに対して、妻赤染衛門のかへし、「さもあらばあれ 大和心し 賢くば 細乳に附けて あらすばかりぞ」。 When her husband, Òe no Masahira’s complained, “I’m afraid that the wet nurse for the baby has poor breast”, she answered, “Don’t worry, it’s OK, she has Yamato Gokoro, Japanese wisdom, though she doesn’t have enough knowledge. His word "breast" has two meanings, "milk" and "knowledge". As her husband was a scholar of Chinese literature, he thought that he should educate the baby by using her knowledge, including the meaning of breastfeeding the baby. Against him, she thought the education should be done through her behavior. That means she is insisting that the wet nurse possesses Japanese wisdom, and she is strong enough to educate the baby by using it. At that time, education was thought to be not taught through language, but rather through the teacher’s actions or behaviors. Òe no Masahira’s was talking about the knowledge, but Emon was talking about the whole character of the wet nurse.

日本人の心である「大和心」について最初に著した女性は赤染衛門です。 「乳母せんとて、まうで来りける女の、乳の細く侍りければ、詠み侍りける」と詞書があり、次に夫である博士の歌、「果なくも 思ひけるかな 乳もなくて 博士の家の 乳母せむとは」。 ここで「乳もなくて」の「乳」を「知」にかけている。 これに対して、妻赤染衛門のかへし、「さもあらばあれ 大和心し 賢くば 細乳に附けて あらすばかりぞ」。 夫の大江匡衡が「乳母の乳が弱くて心配だ」と嘆くと、衛門は「大丈夫、大丈夫。乳母には知識は足りないけれど、大和心があるから」と答えました。 彼の「乳」という言葉には、「乳」と「知識」の二つの意味があります。 夫は漢学者だったので、乳母の知識、特に授乳の意味を通して赤ちゃんを教育すべきだと考えていました。 しかし、衛門は行動を通して教育すべきだと考えました。 つまり、乳母は日本の知恵を持ち、それを用いて赤ちゃんを教育するだけの力を持っていると主張しているのです。 当時、教育は言葉ではなく、教師の行動や振る舞いを通して行われると考えられていました。 大江匡衡は知識について語っていましたが、衛門は乳母の人格全体について語っていました。
