Long, long, long, long time ago rice! The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, Koizumi, has finally decided to release 2,020-year-old rice to the market on June 10th. I heard that rice that is more than three years old is generally used to make rice cookies and other similar products, or to feed cattle or chickens. So, I'm surprised to hear the government still has such old rice. I know the rice is preserved well enough to be eaten as a homemade staple food. Nevertheless, I think the discussion about the high price of rice is heading in a different direction. Koizumi appears to believe that the high price of rice is solely due to the low rice supply. Should we consider the market's pricing mechanism more?

古古古古米！ 小泉農林水産大臣は、ついに6月10日に、2020年産のお米を市場に出すことを決定しました。 3年以上経過したお米は、ライスクッキーなどの加工品や、牛や鶏の飼料として使われることが多いと聞きました。 ですから、政府がまだそのような古い米を保有していると聞いて驚きました。 このお米は保存状態が良く、主食として食べても問題ないそうです。 しかしながら、米価高騰の議論は、どうやら的外れな方向へ進んでいるように思います。 小泉大臣は、米価高騰の原因は米の供給不足だけだと考えているようです。 市場の価格形成メカニズムをもっと考慮すべきではないでしょうか？
