The finale of The Painted Bird. I’ve finished reading the novel The Painted Bird. The story is about a Jewish boy who was taken in by an old woman in the countryside to escape Germany. There is a movie with the same title based on this novel. The story consists of the boy being abused by villagers in many different villages because he looked different from them. After the war, he was placed in an orphanage. He was subsequently found by his parents. However, the endings of the novel and the movie are different. The movie ends with the scene of him writing his name on the train window. The novel, however, ends with the scene in which he regains his voice, which he lost due to the shock of his harsh living conditions. I wondered why the movie changed the ending. I found that the setting of the movie forced the change in the ending. The movie starts with a story set in a country where the spoken language is Esperanto. If the director had kept the ending the same as in the novel, the main character, a 15-year-old boy, would have had to speak Esperanto. Therefore, I think he had to change the ending.

『ペインテッド・バード』の結末。 小説『ペインテッド・バード』を読み終えました。 物語は、ドイツから逃れるため、田舎の老婆に引き取られたユダヤ人の少年の話です。 この小説を原作とした同名の映画があります。 物語は、少年が村人たちと見た目が違うという理由で、様々な村で虐待を受けるというものです。 戦後、彼は孤児院に預けられました。 その後、彼は両親に発見されます。 しかし、小説と映画の結末は異なります。 映画は彼が電車の窓に自分の名前を書く場面で終わります。 しかし、小説は過酷な生活環境のショックで失った声を取り戻す場面で終わります。 なぜ映画は結末を変えたのか疑問に思いました。 映画の舞台設定が、結末の変更を余儀なくさせたのだと分かりました。 映画は、エスペラント語が公用語の国を舞台にした物語から始まります。 もし監督が結末を小説と同じにしていたとしたら、主人公である15歳の少年はエスペラント語を話さなければならなくなったでしょう。だから結末を変える必要があったのだと思います。
