The Flow of Time

The Flow of Time The opening sentence of Hōjōki begins with this phrase: "The flow of the river never ceases, and the water never stays the same." The author compares the passage of time to the flow of a river. We generally think of time as flowing from the past through the present to the future. The word "Ancestor" refers to anyone in a person's family who is earlier in the lineage than their father or mother. "Descendant" refers to someone who is descended from a particular ancestor. This means that the past is located upstream and the future is located downstream. When discussing cause and effect, we tend to view the past as the cause of the future. However, when we think about "will," we imagine time flowing from the future to the present. First, we envision the future, and then we decide how to act. In this case, time flows from the future to the present. Only human beings can think this way. Animals cannot imagine the future; they can only imagine the present and past.

時の流れ 『方丈記』の冒頭はこのフレーズで始まる。 「行く川のながれは絶えずして、しかも本の水にあらず。」 著者は時の流れを川の流れに例えている。 私たちは一般的に、時間は過去から現在を経て未来へと流れていくと考える。 先祖」とは、その人の家系において、父や母よりも古い血筋の人を指す。「子孫」とは、特定の先祖の子孫である人を指す。 つまり、過去は上流に位置し、未来は下流に位置する。 原因と結果を論じるとき、私たちは過去を未来の原因と捉えがちである。 しかし、「意志」について考えるとき、私たちは未来から現在へと流れる時間を想像する。 まず未来を思い描き、それからどう行動するかを決める。 この場合、時間は未来から現在へと流れる。 このように考えることができるのは人間だけである。 動物は未来を想像できず、現在と過去しか想像できない。
