"Gahoujin" (I meet people) In Tsurezuregusa by Yoshida Kenko, it says, "There are three types of good friends. First, a friend who gives me something. Second, a good doctor. Third, a wise person." In an Okinawan proverb, "monogui shido wa goshu" (One who gives something is my master). In this proverb, a friend is not just a friend, but is elevated to the status of master. The common value shared by these two is that a friend or a person worthy of association is someone who can give you something. And Kenko's second and third friends are people who can give you abstract "information," not concrete "things." I want to be that second or third person. To be able to provide information that is useful to others is to become a good person, and meeting such a person is surely the greatest joy of "Gahoujin."
