”Yasha-ga-ike” by Kyōka Izumi

He told her the reason why he came here. : A year ago, his friend Hagiwara Akira went missing, and he was looking for him. Then, a man appears. He was Akira, who was just looking for. Akira told him the reason why he had come to stay in this village. : When he came to this village a year ago, he happened to see a bell-thrust sexton  According to him, he was keeping the promise with a dragon to ring the bell three times a day. When the dragon was shut in the Yasha-ga-ike pond, the dragon promised that as long as the bell was thrusted thrice daily, she would never destroy the village. As the sexton died, Akira succeeded the job and got married the beautiful woman, Yuki. Shirayuki, the dragon of Yasha-ga-ike was eager to go to her lover in the Tsurugi-ga-mine, but she couldn’t go because if she went there, the big flow would happen and it would cause to break the promise with the villager. On the same day, in the village, a plan was going on to stop the drought by scapegoating Yuki. Just when they were going to take Yuri to Yasha-ga-ike, Gakuen and Akira returned from their day trip. In the villagers' and the threes’ argument, Yuri killed herself by stabbing a knife. Akira got angry, and he cut the rope that held the bell and killed himself, too. Then, as the promise was broken by not ringing the bell, the dragon flew to her lover, and a flood happened. The whole village disappeared.

https://www.aozora.gr.jp/cards/000050/files/3407_19566.html ある夏の日、学円という名の男が村にやって来て、一人の美しい女性に出会った。 彼は彼女に、ここに来た理由を話した。 : 1年前、友人の萩原晃が行方不明になり、彼は彼を探していた。 すると、一人の男が現れる。 彼はまさに探していた晃だった。 晃は彼に、この村に滞在することになった理由を話した。 : 1年前、この村に来た時、偶然鐘を突く寺男に出会った。 彼によると、彼は龍との約束を守って、1日に3回鐘を突いていたという。 龍は夜叉ヶ池に閉じ込められた時、1日に3回鐘を突く限り、村を滅ぼさないと約束した。 寺男が亡くなったため、明はその仕事を引き継ぎ、美しい女性百合と結婚した。 夜叉ヶ池の龍、白雪は剣ヶ峰にいる恋人の元へ行きたがっていたが、行くと大洪水が起こり、村人との約束を破ることになるため、行くことができなかった。 その日、村では、百合をスケープゴートにして干ばつを止めようとする計画が進められていた。 ちょうど百合を夜叉ヶ池へ連れて行こうとしたその時、学円と晃が日帰り旅行から戻ってきた。 村人と三人が言い争う中、百合はナイフで刺して自殺した。 晃は怒り、鐘を留めていた縄を切り、自らも自殺した。 そして、鐘を鳴らさなかったことで約束が破られたため、白雪は恋人の元へ飛んでいき、洪水が起こった。 村全体が消え去った。
