The "Boiled Frog "

There was a time when I believed that the story of the "boiled frog" was true. The "boiled frog" is a warning that, under gradual changes in the environment, it is easy to fall into a fatal situation without noticing it. It is based on the legend that if a frog is put in water and slowly brought to a boil from room temperature, it will not sense the danger and will be boiled to death. With modern science, such a phenomenon is impossible, and if you actually gradually heat up water with a frog in it, at some point the frog will sense the danger and jump out of the water, no matter how gradually you raise the temperature. In the novel "The Painted Bird," there is a passage that says, "If you paint a bird and return it to its flock, it will be attacked by its fellow birds because of the difference in the color of its feathers and will eventually be killed," written in a way that makes it seem as if the reader is observing the bird. In response to my point, someone wrote, "Since it is a description in fiction, it is permissible even if it is not scientifically consistent." However, I believe that since this phenomenon itself is symbolic of the medical theme of the novel itself, if this description does not exist as a natural phenomenon, it would affect the very existence of the novel itself, and therefore it is well worth discussing whether it is true or not and correcting its accuracy.

私は一時期「ゆでガエル」はほんとうだと信じていた時期がありました。 「ゆでガエル」というのは、「緩やかな環境変化下においては、それに気づかず致命的な状況に陥りやすいという警句。 水に入れた状態で常温からゆっくり沸騰させると危険を察知できず、そのまま茹でられて死ぬという説話に基づく。」ということだ。 現代科学ではそのような現象はありえないことであり、実際にカエルの入った水を徐々にお湯にしてゆくと、どんなに徐々に温度を上げたとしてもある段階でかえるは危険を察知してお湯から飛び出してしまう。 小説「異端の鳥」の中に「鳥にペンキを塗って、元の群れに戻せば、羽の色の違いによりその鳥は仲間から攻撃され、最後には殺されてしまう」という記述が、あたかもその鳥を観察しているかのような記述の仕方で書いてあった。 ある人は、私の指摘に対し、「それはフィクションの中での記述なので、科学的に整合性がとられていなくても許される」と、書いていた。 しかし、私は、この現象自体がこの小説自体医のテーマを象徴している事象なので、もしこの記述が自然現象として存在しないのであれば、この小説自体の存在意義自体に関わってくるので、それが事実かどうかを議論し、正誤を正す意味は充分にある、と思っている。
