He was designated a member of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals. There was a funny story about Fujiwara no Asatada in the Uji Shūi Monogatari. He was a good player of Shō (笙a Japanese free reed musical instrument), but he was so fat and had difficulty with playing it. He consulted a doctor, the doctor said, “You should eat rice soaked with water (in summer) or with hot water (in winter), then you will be able to lose weight.” He followed the doctor’s advice, but he didn’t lose weight at all. The doctor asked to show his daily meals. There was a mountain of delicious food, and he was eating them soaked with water.
