How forlorn the autumn. Rustling through the leaves, going deep into the mountains, I hear the lonely deer belling for his doe.                                                                       Translated by Peter MacMillan When I hear the voice of the stag crying for his mate stepping through the fallen leaves deep in the mountains—then is the time that autumn is saddest.                                                                 Translated by Joshua S. Mostow Who steps into the mountains? There are two kinds of interpretation, Peter MacMillan thought it’s the author himself, and Mostow thought it’s the stag. Sarumaru Dayū is a member of the Thirty-Six Poetic Sages (Sanjūrokkasen), but there are no detailed histories or legends about him.
