God is in the details. When I read THE DREAM OF A SUMMER DAY written the Lafcadio Hearn the following sentence, I felt a little bit strange about it. “The Otohime, the daughter of the Dragon King, appears on his boat while Taro is sleeping. And invite him to her father’s palace. Then she took one oar, and he took another, and they rowed away together　・・・“ The part what I feel queer was “Then she took one oar, and he took another, and they rowed away together　・・・” That means there were two oars, a pair of oars in the boat. An ordinally fisherman’s boat in Japan has equipped only one Japanese scull. Didn’t he know about that? I found his sentence was based on “ The fisher-Boy Urashima” written by B.H. Chamberlain（in１８８６）. That means there were no version that the Urashima and Otohime rowed the boat together. Chamberlain and Lafcadio Hearn unconsciously imagined the scene based on their culture. I can feel for Eitaku Kobayashi’s agony. Look at the first scene appearing Oto-hime, the oal is stuck on the side of the boat with a rope like a European boat. Urashima is rowing like a Japanese boat at the end of the boat and Oto-hime is rowing at the side of the boat like a European boat in the next scene. This is the compromise between Japanese and European ways.
