Can you speak English?

Can you speak English? Once upon a time, I was going to enter junior high school the next year, and my mom let me learn English conversation at an English club organized by a church. The “tutor” was a woman who had a strong local accent in a southern American district. She corrected my accent of “girl” so harshly. She might have believed that her accent was correct and that she should correct this Japanese boy’s accent, with goodwill. The time passed, I went to work to use the English language. Now I think that experience was useful for me because I came to know there were relative things in the world and there was nothing of absolute right.

英語を話せるとか話せないとか・・・ むかしむかし、翌年中学生になる私に、母は教会が主催する英語クラブで英会話を習わせてくれた。 その 「先生」は、アメリカ南部の地方訛りの強い女性だった。 彼女は私の「girl」というアクセントをきつく訂正した。 彼女は、自分の訛りは正しい、この日本人の男の子の訛りは直すべきだと、好意を持って信じていたのかもしれない。 時が過ぎ、私は英語を使う仕事に就いた。 今にして思えば、この経験は私にとって有益であった。 なぜなら、世の中には相対的なものがあり、絶対的に正しいものなど存在しないことを知ったからである。
