Saru-Suberi

While walking around my city, I saw the flower of Lagerstroemia indica. The flowers themselves are not special, but the longevity is so surprising that I looked it up on websites. It says it has another name, Hyakujitukou (hundred days red), because the flowering season is very long. The Japanese name, Saru-Suberi, comes from the fact that its trunk and branches are so slippery that even monkeys were thought to fall from the tree. It is native to southern China. It has been distributed throughout the tropical regions of the world. It is said to have been introduced to Japan before the Edo period. There is a sad old story in China. A prince rescued a girl during his adventurous journey. They fell in love. The prince told her that he would surely return in 100 days and left her. When the prince came back, the girl had already died, and next to her gravestone there was a tree full of red flowers.
