Boston parents have been known to teach their kids to flip the bird at the Yankees and detest anything in pinstripes, and YANKEES SUCK is apparently among the most popular T-shirts in Boston history.

The phrase” flip the bird” is an interesting phrase.
To flip the bird” is the same meaning as “to give the (middle) finger”.
The meaning is to make an offensive gesture at (someone) by pointing the middle finger upward while keeping the other fingers folded down.
The verbs “give” and “flip” have both been used.
Flip can also refer to the act of flipping (=toss).
In the middle English “flip the bird” meant “toss the bird” meant “to welcome by throwing the bird quickly.”
Why did the middle finger change to the bird?
The first time “give the big bird” had been used was in 1860’s at a theater, expression give the big bird "to hiss someone like a goose."
In that time, it was used as both a form of booing and a form of welcome, so it wasn't completely negative.
Then in the 1960’s the meaning changed and the gesture came to suggest something that is to be put into a certain place.
I can’t explain it more because it is too rude.
(ボストンの親たちは、子供たちにヤンキースを非難し、ピンストライプのものを嫌悪することを教えてきたことで知られていて、YANKEES SUCK はボストンの歴史上最も人気のある T シャツの 1 つであるようです。)
「flip the bird」というフレーズは興味深いフレーズです。
「flip the bird」は「(中指を)立てる」give the (middle) fingerと同じ意味です。
