Family-run Vegetable Shops 家族経営の八百屋

I try to take a brisk walk for 40 minutes at least once a week. 一週間に一回は４０分速足で歩くようにしている。 I usually walk the same course, and on the way there is a small vegetable shop. だいたい同じコースを歩いていて、途中に小さな八百屋がある。 The owner was a stooped elderly woman, and she always stared at people who passed by the store. 店をやっているのは、腰の曲がったおばあさんで、彼女はいつも店の前を通る人をじっと見ている。 The vegetables and fruits looked old, but expensive, so I never saw customers. 野菜や果物は古そうだが、高いので、お客を見たことがない。 A month ago, I noticed a sign saying " We are closing at the end of this month.  We appreciate your support for 70 years." １カ月前に、「店を今月で閉めます。７０年ありがとうございました」という貼り紙に気付いた。 I saw the owner's daughter before, so I thought her family had asked the owner to retire. 私はオーナーの娘を見たことがあるので、家族がオーナーに引退しろと言ったのだと思った。 Aside from the shop, there are some family-run shops and restaurants on the street, but there are no successors, so most of them are closed. その店以外には、家族経営の店やレストランが道に並んでいるが、後継者がいないから、ほとんどの店は閉まっている。 I thought the vegetable shop was lively before supermarkets and convenience stores appear. スーパーやコンビニができる前は、その八百屋はにぎわっていたのだろうと思った。 However, when I passed in front of the store today, the shutter was half opened, and the owner displayed some packages of strawberries and peas. しかし、今日その店の前を通ったら、シャッターが半分開いていて、オーナーがいちごや豆の箱を並べていた。 If these looked fresh, I would like to buy, but they looked old and expensive as they used to be. それらが新鮮だったら、買ったが、以前のように、それらは古くて高かった。
