Meeting a Friend from the Netherlands　オランダからの友人に会う

I met a friend of mine from the Netherlands for the first time in 10 years. １０年ぶりに友人の一人に会った。 When I lived in the Netherlands, I belonged to a group, which female expats or Dutch women who used to live abroad, socialize through some activities. オランダに住んでいた時に、女性の海外駐在者と海外に住んだことのあるオランダ人女性が、いろんな活動を通して交流するグループに入っていた。 She is Malaysian whose husband was a Dutch diplomat, and they had relocated many countries. 彼女はマレーシア人で、ご主人は大使で、何か国も引っ越しした。 When I met her for the first time, I was a bit offended because she said that my English was bad. 最初に彼女に会った時、私はちょっと気分を悪くした。なぜなら、彼女が私の英語が下手だと言ったので。 She was outspoken and chatty, but I became to like her, so I was looking forward to seeing her. 彼女はハッキリと物を言って、おしゃべりだったが、私は彼女が好きになったにで、会うのが楽しみだった。 Although her hair has turned white, she is still curious and energetic. 彼女の髪は白くなっていたが、まだ好奇心旺盛で元気だ。 Her 78 year-old husband is also fit. 彼女の７８歳のご主人も元気だ。 I was wondering whether they could climb up and down stairs when we take subways, but they didn't seem to mind at all. 地下鉄に乗るとき、階段の上り下りができるかどうか気になっていたが、全く気にしてない様子だった。 She said that she was surprised to see many elderly people walking alone using walker. 彼女は多くの老人が歩行器で一人で歩いているのを見てびっくりしたと言った。 She admired how independent they were. なんて自立してるんだろうと感心した。 I found her idea very interesting because I feel sorry for elderly people who don't support them. 彼女の意見は興味深かった。なぜなら、私は助けてくれる人がいない老人をかわいそうだと思っているから。 This reminds me of something that I take it for granted in Japan. こういうことが、日本で当たり前と思っている何かに気付かせてくれる。
