House Maids in the Past 昔の女中

I'll write about a woman who is in a morning drama by national broadcaster in Japan. 国営放送の朝のドラマの中の女性について書く。 She was an actual person in the Meiji period who married British man. 彼女は、イギリスの男性と結婚した明治時代の実在の人物だ。 She was from a former samurai family, but her family lost their status because of the Meiji revolution. 彼女は元侍の出身だが、家族は、明治維新でその地位を失った。 She took a husband and lived with her family to pay off their debut, but he couldn't stand her grandfather's old way of thinking, he ran away. 彼女は借金を返すために、婿養子をとって一緒に住んだが、夫は彼女の祖父の古い考えに耐えられなくて、逃げてしまった。 She had to find a job, and she decided to work as a house maid for the British man who taught English at the local school. 彼女は仕事を見つけなくてはいけなくて、地元の学校で英語を教えるイギリス人の住み込みの女中として働く決心をした。 At that time, it was quite unusual for a foreigner who lived in Japan, so the local people didn't know how to deal with him. そのころ、日本に住む外国人は珍しく、地元の人はどう接していいかわからなかった。 When he chose his house maid, he proposed some conditions, such as the maid should be from a samurai family. 彼が女中を決める際に、いくつか条件を出した。例えば女中は侍の家の出身でなくてはいけない。 When he met her for the first time, he asked her to show her arms and legs. 彼が彼女に会った時に、彼は彼女に腕と足を見せるように言った。 When she lifted up her kimono, he said that her legs were too sturdy for a samurai daughter.  彼女が着物をめくった時に、彼は彼女の足は侍の娘にしては太いと言った。 As I expected, the scene became controversial online. 私が思ったとおり、このシーンは、ネットで物議となった。 This practice should not be accepted in modern-day, but maybe in the past, women would be treated like that. 現在ではありえない行為だが、昔は多分そんなふうに女性は扱われていたのだろう。 In addition, it seemed that house maids for foreigners had to have a sexual relationship with them. その上、外国人の為の女中は性的な関係も結ばなくてはいけなかったようだ。 Since the drama aired in the morning, I am not sure if the scene would be included. ドラマは朝放送されるから、そのシーンが含まれるかわからない。 However, in the real story, the couple got married and she helped him write Japanese ghost stories. しかし、本当の話では、２人は結婚して、彼女は夫が日本の怪談を書くのを手伝った。 He naturalized in Japan. 彼は日本に帰化した。
