Recently I have begun posting on Bluesky, although I often wonder whether all social network posts are a waste of time. *** It's wonderful to discover musical transcriptions that surpass the original. Mischa Maisky's interpretation of Brahms' Opus 78 violin sonata for the cello is is a good example. Its deep sonorous chords make this piece even more "Brahmsian" than the original. *** I love the way poetry, art, and music can interact synergistically. Marcel Duchamp's 1912 "Nude Descending A Staircase" has inspired numerous works. Among those, X. J. Kennedy's 1960 poem with the same title is one of my favorites. And Allen Shearer's 1980 a cappella rendition of this poem has a splendid fractal quality reminiscent of the original. *** I have been enjoying Stephen West's "Philosophize This!" podcast. It is wonderful how he takes works of literature and then examine the philosophical ideas behind them.
