Meharizushi is a local speciality of Wakayama Prefecture. It's a rice ball wrapped in pickled takana(mustard greens).
Last weekend, we harvested some takana leaves, and as soon as we got home, I pickled them. Since it was our first harvest, the leaves were very thin and tender. I thought a few days of pickling would be enough.
My family loves meharizushi, so yesterday, I made it. I cooked three and a half go of rice, and nine normal sized ones and two small ones. I used 150g cooked rice for one.
It seems that some people simply use plain white rice or sushi rice, but I season my rice with soy sauce and tuna flakes from cans.
My mother used steamed bonito, but using canned tuna can be just as delicious as her version.
I make meharizushi every year around this season.
My husband ate one, son ate two, and I ate one for dinner. My son took two , husband took one for lunch, and I ate two small ones, but they were not enough, so I ate another one. Now one is left. Maybe, my husband will eat it for dinner.
It's delicious. You can try it when you visit Wakayama.
