When I want to know the meaning of a word

What do you do when you want to know the meaning of a word? This morning, I wanted to know the meaning of the word, “commit.” I know some meanings and phrases using the word, but I don’t feel catching the whole meanings of it. What made me want to know more about it was when I heard the sentence, “My mom has me committed.” I couldn’t understand what it meant. When I don’t understand the meaning of a word, I usually look it up into an English-English dictionary to get a rough image of its meanings first, and then I use an English-Japanese dictionary. In some cases, I use an etymology dictionary because it’s easier to understand its multiple meanings with an image. For example, the word “commit” is made of “com-“ and “-mit”. “Com-” means “together” and “-mit” means “send” or “let go.” https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=commit It’s easier for me to understand a word after I break it into some parts. After I get a rough image of the word, I read the example sentences as many as I can. Unfortunately, I don’t think I fully understand the meanings of the “commit”, but I think I’ll understand them eventually through a lot of sentences with it.
