Taiwan has imposed tariffs on imported American vehicles for many years.
This policy aims to protect our local vehicle manufacturer called Yulon.
For example, an imported American vehicle will be imposed with 17.5% import tariff plus 5% VAT and 4% trade promotion service charges.
A Tesla Model 3 Performance which costs $47,490 in the US is priced at $77,000 in Taiwan.
The price difference is as high as +67.2%.
However, after Trump declared that the US would impose 20% tariff on products imported from Taiwan, our negotiator might propose 0% tariffs on imported American vehicles to bargain with the US in exchange for decreasing the tariff by 5%.
As a matter of fact, many Taiwanese people expect it very much as our local vehicles suck.
Most of Taiwanese people are driving Japanese, Europe and America cars.
