I started a new job called “rater” last year. To put it simply, it’s a role where you evaluate AI systems or algorithms. In other words, you assess their behavior from a human’s point of view so that they work more smartly. This is actually interesting, maybe because it’s something only humans can do (at least for now).
I sometimes mention AI in my posts, and I do believe it’s evolving while we are increasingly depending on it. When I started using Lang-8, the predecessor of Nyan-8, AI was not as prevalent as it is today. I imagine some Nyan-8 users now make use of interactive AI tools such as ChatGPT to enhance their language learning. This makes me wonder about something that might not cross the minds of many users on this platform.
Is it worth still mastering writing in a foreign language at the time when AI can refine your sentences for you? What I mean is that if your writing level is above intermediate, perhaps it’s more valuable to focus on other skills. For example, speaking is primarily a human-to-human activity, so it would be awkward to use AI in the middle of a conversation. Writing, on the other hand, is a human-to-text interaction, and you have room to make your sentences better. The core of communication should be ensuring your message is as clear as possible. In this sense, I think it’s better to use AI for assistance than sending awkward and hard-to-understand sentences. The advantage of Nyan-8 is that it allows you to refine your sentences further by getting help from other users.
I know this might be controversial, especially on this platform. Ultimately, if I liken this to Udon, it depends on whether or not you insist on hand-made udon and never admit udon made by advanced machines. Personally, I like udon as long as it's tasty.
