Book Review #1

I’ve read “教養としての生成AI.” by Ryo Shimizu. The book introduces the history of generative AI, explains how it has evolved until now, how it works, and how humans should be involved with it. What interested me is that AI development proceeded rapidly due to the game industry. Specifically, AI made use of the GPU (graphic processing unit), which is used to play high-quality games, to accelerate its information processing. After finishing the book, I realized some of my ideas about AI were inaccurate. I vaguely thought that as AI keeps growing, it might eventually reach breakthroughs such as having emotions. However, this doesn’t seem likely unless the direction of AI advancement changes dramatically, because AI is basically something that behaves as if it has intelligence. It can give you surprisingly smart answers by utilizing a tremendous amount of data, but it doesn’t create anything new (this makes me think about what intelligence truly is). When we discuss how we can survive in the upcoming AI society, I know many people say you should be creative, as that is something AI can’t be. I’m not sure if this is good advice, because not everyone can be creative. The book also says we need creativity to prepare for the unpredictable future, and it mentions that another important quality for us is hospitality. I agree with the author. I think hospitality is something we can attain by being aware of how we spend our time in daily life. In order for me to be sensitive to hospitality, I should avoid getting addicted to garbage content on the Internet.
