If you know the basics of Japanese, you should know a Japanese equivalent of ‘you’ is あなた. And, if you’re deeply familiar with Japanese, you should also know あなた is a tricky word, which could sound derogatory.
I’d thought of the word ‘あなた’ this way, but I recognized there are some Japanese people who call others "on equal terms" あなた on Nyan-8. To be honest, I’m not quite sure how I can take this. While I’ve started to feel like this may be a subjective matter, there’s still something wrong with it. What I can say is that if someone refers to you by saying あなた, it should be okay to call them あなた too.
What are your thoughts on this? I would appreciate it if you could share your own opinions whether you’re Japanese or not.
