Artificial Superintelligence vs. Superhumans

While attending an online English class, I stumbled upon an ominous article titled ‘Could AI Go Rogue and End Humanity?’. In the article, several scientists express concerns that AI may develop into Artificial Superintelligence, which could pose a threat to humanity in the future. Honestly, I found this not only serious but also very intriguing. When I was a kid, I vividly remember going to the theater to see the famous film ‘Matrix’. I was overwhelmed by its storyline, not to mention the thrilling action scenes. Although I couldn’t fully comprehend what was going on in the movie, I recall thinking “I’ve just witnessed something extraordinary”. Now that I’ve become an adult, I’ve come to realize the film revolves around the theme of “AI vs. humans”. Who knew that something that once appeared purely fictional may come true in the future? When it comes to AI, there’s so much I want to talk about. I do know there are pros and cons of AI development. While AI can enhance our language abilities and improve our lives, it has the potential to hugely impact job markets, including my own, and influence our behavior negatively. This is a bit off-topic, but a scene from the anime ‘Cowboy Bebop’ comes to mind. In the scene, a veteran mechanic who sees his apprentice trying to implement the latest equipment says, “Do you want the machines to use you, or do you want to use the machines?” This kind of situation seems to happen to us. I sometimes wonder if we use AI and the latest technology, or if we're used by them. I’ve previously read books written by the renowned author Yuval Noah Harari, which delve into human history and speculate about our future. While all of his books are very interesting and informative, one of his theories particularly intrigued me. He suggests that humans may evolve into “superhumans” in the future, thanks to advancements in biotechnology. Furthermore, he mentions that if such beings came into existence, ordinary humans would not be able to understand them because their way of thinking should be far beyond ours. From my point of view, these theories are captivating rather than threatening. In the future, we may have a chance of seeing “Artificial Superintelligence vs. Superhumans”. However, if such an unprecedented conflict were to occur, we humans would be just out of the place. Someday, if possible, I’d love to watch a film titled “Artificial Superintelligence vs. Superhumans”, akin to “Alien vs. Predator” while munching popcorn. I’m not sure if the storyline makes sense to me though.

英語のオンラインレッスンを受けていた時に、何とも不穏なタイトル「AIは暴走し、人類を滅ぼしうるのか？」を掲げる記事に出くわした。この先、AIがスーパーAIに進化を遂げ、人類の脅威となる可能性を一部の科学者が危惧しているといった内容の記事だった。正直なところ、深刻な話に思える反面、非常に興味深いものだった。 自分が子供だった頃、有名な映画「マトリックス」を見に劇場に足を運んだ時のことを今でも鮮明に記憶している。スリル溢れるアクションシーンはさることながら、そのストーリー展開に圧倒された。映画の中で何が起こっているのか理解が追い付かなかったものの、「何かとてつもないものを見たぞ」と強く印象に残ったのを覚えている。 大人になった今、「マトリックス」はAIと人類の戦いがテーマの映画だと認識するに至った。かつては純粋にフィクションの世界だと思えたものが、いずれは現実に起こりうるかもしれないなんて、誰が想像できただろう。 AIについては、話したいことがたくさんある。自分の中ではっきりしているのは、AI開発はメリットとデメリットを併せ持つことだ。AIは自分たちの言語能力や生活を向上させうる一方で、自分の仕事を含め、労働市場に多大な影響を及ぼし、自分たちの振る舞いにも負の影響を与えかねない。話が少し逸れるが、「カウボーイビバップ」というアニメのワンシーンが頭に浮かんでくる。ベテランの機械工が、最新の機材を実装しようとする弟子に対して、「機械に使われたいのか、機械を使いたいのか、どっちだ」とたしなめるシーンだ。こういった状況は自分たちにも起こりうるものだと思う。時々、自分たちはAIや最新技術を使っているのか、それとも使われているのか疑問に思ってしまうことがある。 以前に、ユヴァル・ノア・ハラリという著名な作家の本を読んだことがある。彼の本には人間の歴史についての洞察や、自分たちの未来に対する推測が織り込まれている。どの本も大変興味深く、有益な情報に富んだものだが、とりわけ彼の自説の一つに興味をそそられた。彼がいうには、バイオテクノロジーの進展により、人類は将来、スーパーヒューマンに進化する可能性があるらしい。また、もしそのような存在がこの世に誕生したら、今までの人類は彼らを理解することができなくなるという。彼らの考え方は、自分たちには到底把握できないものとなるからだ。 自分からすると、こういった話は脅威的というより魅力を秘めたものに映ってしまう。自分たちは将来、「スーパーAI vs. スーパーヒューマン」を見る機会があるかもしれない。ただ、仮にそんな未曽有の事態が発生したら、自分たちはもはや蚊帳の外だろう。 いつか可能なら、「エイリアン vs. プレデター」のような「スーパーAI vs. スーパーヒューマン」の映画を、ポップコーンを頬張りながら見てみたい。もっとも、ストーリー展開が理解できるかどうかは別の話だが。
