Tokyo People VS. Osaka People

My Australian teacher, whom I referred to before, returned to Japan. After that, I immediately had an opportunity to talk to him. First, we caught up on each other’s lives, talked about cherry blossoms in each region, and eventually started discussing geography. He mentioned that while Australia is a huge country, it has a relatively low population - approximately 26 million people, less than a quarter of Japan’s total population. In particular, Tokyo has over 10 million people. As mentioned, he rents an apartment in Osaka where he teaches Japanese students from across the country. When it comes to popular destinations in Japan, I assume many foreigners think of Tokyo or Kyoto. Besides those, Osaka is known as one of the main two cities (of course, another is Tokyo). While talking about Osaka, in jest, I told him that some Osaka people don’t really like Tokyo people, and vice versa. This seemed to resonate with him, and he mentioned that when he talked to students from Tokyo about Osaka, his place, they sometimes displayed a cagey attitude. Indeed, this seems to be a well-known joke. To Osaka people, Tokyo people seem like killjoys(I'm not quite sure if the word 'killjoy' is an appropriate English equivalent for ノリが悪い). To Tokyo people, Osaka people seem noisy or crazy. I don’t think they are hostile toward each other, but they do have a rivalry in many aspects. I told him which one I was in favor of, but I better not refer to it here because it can be controversial. Additionally, what I find quite amusing is that neither group seems to care much about people in Nagoya, which is thought of as one of the main three cities and located between them. In any case, what I can say is that you may have entirely different experiences depending on where you stay in Japan.

東京の人々 vs. 大阪の人々 以前の投稿で話したオーストラリア人の先生が日本に戻ってきて、その後早速会話をする機会がありました。最初にお互いの近況について、そして各地の桜のこと、最終的には地理について話し始めました。 彼が言うには、オーストラリアは大きな国ですが、その割に人口は少ないそうです。およそ2600万人、日本の総人口の4分の1に満たない数です。日本ではとりわけ、東京に1000万人以上が住んでいます。 過去に言及したように、彼は大阪にアパートを借りていて、そこから日本全国の生徒を教えています。日本の人気観光スポットといえば、多くの外国人の方は東京や京都あたりを思い浮かべると思いますが、それとは別に、大阪は日本の二大都市の一つとして知られています(もちろん、もう一つは東京です)。そこで大阪について話している時に冗談で、一部の大阪の人は東京の人のことをあまりよく思っていないし、逆パターンもあるよと伝えました。どうやら心当たりがあったらしく、彼が東京住まいの生徒に対して本人の住んでいる大阪のことを口にした時、彼らが訝しげな態度を取ることがあったそうです。 実際、これはよく知られた冗談だと思います。大阪の人にとっては、東京の人はノリが悪い、東京の人にとっては、大阪の人は騒がしいだとかズレているといった具合です。これはお互いに敵対意識があるというわけではなく、様々な点においてライバル意識があるからなのだと思います。彼には「自分は〇〇派だよ」と教えましたが、ここでは物議を醸したくないので伏せておくことにします。この他に、自分にとって面白おかしいのは、どちらの陣営も三大都市の一つと見なされ、両者の中間に位置する名古屋の人のことは全く気にかけていなさそうです。 なんにせよ自分が言えるのは、日本のどこに滞在しているかによって、全く異なる体験ができるかもしれません。
