Life can become challenging. That’s why all the important people in history—and all the successful people today—have tried to create systems to tackle life and its hardships.
Such systems can be sets of rules. For example, you might have been taught, as a child, about God’s Ten Commandments. Similar rules or laws exist to help navigate through life more easily, and one such set of rules has been developed by Patrick Bet-David, an Iranian-American businessman who has had a successful career in insurance.
He has a couple of rules that he insists we follow if we want to change our lives. Continue reading and see if these rules make sense for you.
1. Invest in your identity
Before you achieve certain results—before you become someone—you have to be that very person. It sounds contradictory, right? If you want to become a certain person, you’re not that person yet. So how can you be the person you want to become?
The idea is that to be someone, you have to behave and think in a certain way. A good example is the person who becomes a millionaire overnight. If they don’t have the mindset of a millionaire, they will most likely go bankrupt in a couple of years. Why? Because they lack the right financial mentality and education. They don’t have the identity or mindset needed to hold on to millions of dollars.
2. Let the right people into your life
It matters who you spend your time with. We all have a limited time on this planet, and whether we like it or not, we’re affected by the people we surround ourselves with. You’re no exception.
There’s a reason your parents didn’t want you to hang around certain people. And if you’re a parent yourself, you likely don’t want your children around certain kids or adults either. Why? Because we tend to become like those around us—and sometimes, we don’t like what we see around us.
They say we are the sum of the five people we spend the most time with. Look around you. What do you see? Do you enjoy their company? Would you love to be in their shoes?
If not, then rethink how you spend your days and with whom. This has a bigger impact on your life than you might imagine.
3. Hold a credibility score
Integrity is a value that can take you a long way in life. Be honest and consistent in everything you do, and you’ll notice how people respect you more—while those who aren’t worth your time naturally drift away.
Integrity has everything to do with self-respect. If you want others to respect you, your time, and your energy, it’s best to start by keeping your promises. The great thing is, you can start small.
For example, you can show up on time. If you tell your friends you’ll be at the park at five o’clock, be there at five. If you promise to help someone over the weekend, then follow through during the weekend.
As you maintain your own credibility score, you can also evaluate others by the same standard. If a friend never arrives on time, you’ll know why inviting them somewhere might not be worth it. If someone keeps making promises they don’t fulfill, you’ll recognize that your time is being wasted.
Identity, friendship, and integrity—these are the three core principles behind these first three rules. However, Patrick Bet-David offers many more rules for living a successful life. In fact, there are twenty-five in total. If you want to learn more, you can order his book Doing the Impossible on Amazon or from his official website.
What do these rules offer you? A mindset and structure for approaching life with greater success. Thousands of people have built lucrative businesses based on these twenty-five rules for life—and you could be the next to thrive.
