Harry Potter and artificial intelligence  When I saw a video of an AI tool which can make consequential moves based on only a picture, these pictures reminded me of the ones in the Harry Potter series. In the series, unlike the still picture in our world, the people in the picture can “move” as if they were living, like smiling or walking. I once thought that these animated pictures typically reflect the magical nature of the world, because it seemed impossible in the scientific way. Let's assume that you want to move a person in the picture. You have to simulate entire brain cells in a person to know what they would think to do. Not only that, you also have to simulate the environment like wind and temperature in one square meter around them that may affect their mind. Of course what you have to simulate is not only the environment around them, but also in the larger scale for perfect simulation. In the end, you have to simulate the whole universe to make a sheet of moving pictures, which is apparently impossible. Now I realized that my assumption was wrong. If we need an accurate estimation of the next seconds,my assumption was right. However, if all we needed was “next seconds that seem to possibly happen for us”, there's no need for a hyper computer to simulate the entire universe, nor magic that makes the impossible possible. Furthermore,I find that this series has another point to do with AI. The series has plenty of what I call “non-human beings with personality”, like house-elves or talking portraits. I have felt that the characters in the story are too cruel and careless, and lack respect for those semi-humans which seemed to have personality like us. Now I think that their attitude is reasonable if I assume these magical beings are machines for us. For instance, no one pays respects or thanks to their car navigation systems even if those machines can talk fluently to navigate the route because these systems are not people, even an ancient person could have mistaken the machines as a person hiding in a car. The car navigation systems in the future would be so advanced that they could talk about any topic like humans, and 21st century people could assume that they're equally smart as human beings, yet people in the future still wouldn't pay any respect for them. The people in the Harry Potter world see Magical beings with personalities in that way. By the way, why do HP series and AI have something in common? In my opinion, it stems from our instinctual way of thinking: Animism. Animism originally refers to the ancient belief that everything has souls, a.k.a. personality with emotions like us humans, so that we can communicate with them as we do to other humans. For example, an ancient shaman would have asked the Rain Spirit, saying: Oh, Rain Spirit! Fall the rain for us, please! The Harry Potter series also adopted this old way of thinking called magic. Our ancestors used Animism thinking because it was easier for us human beings to understand the world than the modern scientific thinking of numbers and equations. For modern people it is the same, this set of personality and natural language is still the easiest interface to control, compared with writing the machine language or pushing the button on the complex remote controller. That's why we shout “hey Alexa, turn on the air conditioner for me!”, like an ancient shaman did to control their environment. HP series can be read as a science fiction about AI, other than just a pure fantasy. For example, relationship between a house-elf and talking portraits in Sirius Black’s house can be interpreted as a story about an accident causes by non intentional interaction between a robot and AI powered pictures? What do you think about it?
