Why is tea called tea in English? Have you ever wondered that? It's globally recognised that tea originated from China with written records dating back over 2,000 years ago. In the local dialect in Hokkien, tea is pronounced as "tay", so when the Dutch and Portuguese traders came to China, they brought tea back to Europe, the Dutch traders adopted the local sound, “tay”into "thee" in Dutch. And then it went to England, it became tea in English. And that's where tea is from. In French, thé is the same as the local dialect in Hokkien.
