The State of Alabama

What do you know about Alabama? Every English learner has probably seen the film Forrest Gump. The main character, Forrest Gump was born in Alabama. For more than a century before Alaba became an American state, it was part of French territory. Every autumn the fields of Alabama look like they are covered in snow.  This is Alabama cotton.   Farmers planted more than[cb] half a million acres [/cb]every year, and then pray for the good harvest. Nothing has played a bigger role in state history than cotton. Once the cotton was picked by hand by African slaves. Today, a single harvester can do the same job with incredible speed. Farmers harvest 100,000 tons of cotton here every year. Alabama is therefore known as the Cotton State. Birmingham's entrepreneurs have their eyes on valuable minerals, rich in coal, iron ore and limestone. The giant steel plant was run by Germany and cost nearly 5 billion dollars to build, was by far the largest investment ever in Alabama's history.  It's a good reason for German companies chose Alabama as their steel plant. Because the only Mercedes-Benz factory in the United States is located in Alabama. A billion dollars Mercedes-Benz cars leave the facilities every year, each one built with high-quality steel. Workers in Alabama are not just making German cars.  Outside Montgomery, 2,500 people work here, a Hyundai Motor plant of South Korea. Japanese Honda and Toyota also have production facilities in Alabama. [cb]Alabama's auto manufacturing center, together with its thriving steel industry have given the state the nickname "the Detroit of the South."[/cb]
