How to Study World History

My son likes world history very much and he is much more familiar with it than me. He sometimes ask me a question about a figure or an event in the past, but there is few answers I have heard. He says that the point of learning history effectively is to pay attention to horizontal relationships, and it would make you easier to broaden knowledge. I just tried to memorize terms of history without such an idea when I was about his age, so I am impressed how he is.
