The Virginia Opossum, named after the state where it was first identified by scientists, is nocturnal. When threatened, they first bare their teeth and act like they will bit you if you attack them or if they feel threatened. If an opossum feels scared, it will then play dead. Our dog kept barking. The animal was playing dead.  Often, if an animal plays dead, a predator will leave it alone. For example, bears do not normally want to kill people. But if one attacks and you cannot run away, you can play dead. Many times, it will stop attacking and run away, assuming the threat (you) has been eliminated.
